Beth L Rosenberg has worked at with bears for the past 15 years, first at Anan Creek in Southeast Alaska and then at McNeil River on the northern Alaska Peninsula. In 2024, she formed the Brown Bear Research Lab, dedicated to the study of behavior and mapping habitat use. Currently, she is part of an interdisciplinary team developing a photo-identification technique for brown bears, which she presented at this meeting.

Using digital photographs, we can learn to identify and track individual brown bears at McNeil River on the northern Alaska Peninsula, then use these techniques to locate individuals in other remote areas as they disperse in search of resources across the landscape. Learn how we leverage the power and reach of Citizen Science imagery to help track brown bears using only photographs, and about the development of a photo-ID algorithm to identify individual bears, genetics not required.
